When I find it I'm going to Educate them in a most severe way.

I have my claim In the system and am still looking for a manifest of Continental Airline, or USAF orders with names who shipped with me.

I have already incorporated Letters found on line and Kurt Priessman's package concerning the issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks to all for you service and sacrifices.

Look forward to hearing more information as the planning becomes available.

Comments:  I was TDY to Tan Son Nhut Air Base several times between Sep 1964 and Jan 1967.  I was PCS with the 463rd TCW (later the 6200 A&E Sq) at Clark Air Base, PI.

Got to see the Bob Hope show with Anita Bryant, Joey Heatherton, Phyllis Diller, et. al. in 1966 (I think.  Might have been 1964).

I worked mostly on C-130-B's that were on the Rebel Ramp; across the runway from the main base.  Charlie hit us one night but I don't think we lost any aircraft that night.  Maybe a C-123 over on the main ramp.

I think it was Tan Son Nhut where I saw Charlie ignite one of the large fuel storage tanks.

Just cannot remember specific dates/times anymore.

"Thanks for the memories."

Comments:  Its Thanksgiving for all of us that are still alive. Sitting here reflecting on where we were and where we are. I was a T/Sgt Comm/Nav guy at Tan Son Nhut, and to be totally honest I never did anything particularly heroic by any ones standards. But on my behalf, I was there.

I look at the facts that I left a wife and two girls ages 3 and 6 to go there. I think and look at the differences now, we did good. The troops today are mostly notified in a decent amount of time to prepare their families for being alone. I had actually 4 days notification before I left my then duty assignment, which I had been assigned to for 6 total months. One Monday morning I went to work and that Friday we had cleared quarters and I started the movement of the Lawson family to Mich. from Mass. That's what we did then, possible to complain but it hardly ever made a difference.

I am not complaining now, don't get me wrong, my commander felt I could be excused from that duty do to the level I was working at, at AFCRL (Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratory) at Hanscom AFB. Of course being a more senior Air Force person I had a feeling of duty and ask to do my duty as many many before me. This is not about that at all, this is about the strides the military has made to take care of its own. I watch troops in Korea say hello to loved ones in the states and these folks are on the DMZ line, not accompanied tours. I regularly see troops whose homes are near mine get time to wish all at home happy holidays.

I am extremely proud of the American public that now recognize our Military men as the heroes they truly are, we know they are all volunteers, but still feel the patriotism that is required to support our government with the effort required to do their jobs. My brothers, I believe in many ways with our contributions of times past and the observations made by these fine troops today we must have done the right things then. I am very proud to be part of our era, and so sorry for those that paid that final extreme price that those 58,xxx paid to get us to where we are.

Many of us were unknowingly subject to Hep-B because of the injector gun not being properly cleaned after each injection.

I will be going before a board soon and need feedback.  If you have Hep-B and are unsure these guns were used in the 1960's in basic training.   There is a lot of material online.

But would like to know if anyone does not know how they got Hep-B. this may be the case.

Comments:  My name is Richard E. Slaten.  I served at Tan Son Nhut Air Base from May 4, 1971 to May 5, 1972.

I worked for 7th Air Force Headquarters, Awards and Decorations Directorate.    I was an E-4 and a worked with a Chief Master Sergeant (can’t remember his name), Captain Golden, and Major Dwyer.  My hootch compound must have been on the other side of the Security Police barracks.

I remember that we were close enough my rack would shake across the floor when the choppers would pass over low.

I remember the constant small arms fire, damaged and destroyed helicopters, severely damaged C-130s limping back to the flight line, the constant heavy artillery firing, seeing what I described to my wife as a B-52 strike outside of the base early one morning in June?

Anyway, the danger of snipers was enough that we had strict “non” saluting zones at 7th Air Force.  No one wore any brass, etc.

I remember the congestion around the BX and the fights over 6-pack refrigerators or better grades of liquor.

We were in conversation with AF guys at Bien Hoa Air Base when they were hit by rockets.  I remember that one of the rockets hit the police barracks and 6 - 7 Policemen died in the attack.

I remember the Son Tay Raid and the POWs being moved shortly before the raiders actually landed.  All of these events, plus many, many more, have saddened my life ever since.

Didn’t you guys have a “duck” with a 50 cal machine gun?  The heat, humidity and stink of the place was horrible.  I remember watching the Vietnamese fishing the sewer outside my hootch and actually catching something.   Remember the field hospital?

To make amends, the building management asked me to select another day for our honors and I chose Veterans Day.  Tonight the building was awash in Yellow, Green, and Red in honor of the Tan Son Nhut Association Reunion.  Later in the evening the lights are scheduled to changed to Red, White, and Blue in recognition of all Veterans.

I wish all of you could have seen those colors and shared the pride I felt.

Comments:  The past three nights have been the history of Vietnam 1964-1975.

What I took away from this, which was very hard to watch sometimes, was one statement made by a commentator.   It was not whether we won the war when we left.  It was not that we left with a peace accord.  It was how the men and women fought.

It was the war that many will see in different lights.   I myself have changed some of my attitudes since watching this documentary.  In the end, was how brave our men and woman fought.

He also said that WWII was considered the great war but this is not true.   Each war should be considered the great sacrifice.  As today I say I will consider troops in war zones today as the one of the greatests heroes.  So today and every day SALUTE to those in the war zone today and the future as you are my heroes.

I worked on flightline, RF-4C tail number 838, till it was sent back to the world for overhaul.

There was a helicopter crash by my barracks, in Nov 1968.  I believe that there were three killed in the crew.  I think of, and pray for those guys.

They Saved some of us by impacting their aircraft in the only vacant spot around.  We couldn't get to them because of fire and ammo burning off.
Mama-san was mad when I left.  She reported to the First Sergeant that I stole her fan.

I don't remember the raydomes.  I left many good people over there, that has never aged in my memory.

I served with the 98th Trans Det., 120th Avn Co, 145th Avn Btn, US Army, from May 1964 to May 1965 as a helicopter repairman.  Initially trained on H-21's but transitioned to Huey's in July 1964 when we finally retired the old birds.

We never suffered any attacks from the hostile forces while I was there but we were always leery.  When the Tet offensive hit I was patrolling the streets and highways of South Los Angeles as a rookie California Highway Patrol Traffic Officer, feeling very fortunate to have had a very benign tour while in Viet Nam.

I salute all those who served in country.

Comments:  I am trying to translate information from my fathers flight log books, and his memory. He says that he landed at Tan Son Nhut in August of 1967 with a hung bomb. His flight logs indicate "CVA64-NCF" and then notations for a land landing rather than a carrier landing. Then a day later the notation for "NCF-CVA64." I don't know what "NCF" or possible "NCP" stands for, as the only IATA call sign for Tan Son Nhut I can find is SGN. Other than a call sign "Navy-Charlie-Foxtrot," might your organization know if "NCF" might have been used as an airfield designation?

Comments:  We had checked the Blake Hotel out on the web when we first knew it was the hotel of the reunion and saw where several people had things stolen.  One guy had lost 2 Laptops stolen while staying there.  We took care not to leave much laying around the room while we were out.  When we got home and unpacked, our Blood Pressure tester was missing.

I had thought Mary Ann had packed it and she thought I had, as we both use it.  I'm not saying it went missing at the hotel, but it was lost either there or in baggage at the Airport.

However, neither of us remember packing it, and we checked the room several times before we left.  The tester was always sitting on the table, and the only thing on the table when we left was the light.

I hope whoever, took it had more need for it than we did, and we can afford another one.

Hope to see you all next year.

Comments:  To fellow Tan Son Nhuters, I enjoyed the reunion at Charlotte, NC immensely.  It was great to chat with old friends and meet the good folks again.

The reunion was great with the exception of the hotel which had a few problems but that was overcome by the comradeship.  The hospitality suite was fantastic, had wing room and lots of chairs and of course lots of winning the war again.

The presentation of the plaque at the community center was very nice, good weather and it was nice to be recognized.  Now the association will be known to more and more people.

The banquet was fantastic as usual, great food and very nice setting.  The guest speaker, James Harding, Colonel, USAF (Ret), Air Force Cross recipient gave an excellent presentation with slides and video.  He also spoke with conviction and drive about the situation the world is in now and what it is coming to, a very motivating speech.

It was great to see the gang again and hopefully will again in Dayton, OH.

Welcome home,

For the third straight year, Arkansas State University has been awarded the designation of Military Friendly School. “G.I. All active duty military and their dependents, as well as honorably discharged veterans, receive the in-state tuition rate for academic courses and programs offered at the ASU System campuses located in Jonesboro, Beebe, Mountain Home and Newport, regardless of the location of the individual’s duty station or residence.

Thanks for an absolutely great 4 days of Tan Son Nhut Association Brothers and Sisters.  We had a marvelous speaker in Col. Jim Harding and his Saturday night speech was special.  He and his wife Barbara are now a Brother and our Sister.

Thanks to Rena, for not one, but three boxes of homemade delicious gingersnap cookies.

Thanks to Janeth Lawson for her hand crafted Star quilt which was the star item on our auction table this year.

Hugs and kisses to everyone who bought items from our table.   All monies go to the TSNA.

The presence of all the Brothers and Sisters is deeply appreciated as we cannot have a family reunion when the family doesn't attend.  Love to each and every one of you and we are already getting anxious to see you all next year in Dayton, Ohio for the "Special Memorial Bench Dedication."  You have have paid for your piece of the bench!  Be there in person when the TSNA recognizes you!

When all the good-bye's are said in the end and you can see all the smiles, feel the hugs and see the tears of happiness, you know it was worth every minute of it.

We enjoyed seeing some old friends and meeting new ones as well.  Getting to know y'all and talk and laugh and yes sometimes shed a tear, is something I will never forget.  This is what family is all about and from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for making us part of the TSNA family.

Again, we thank you for a great reunion and look forward to see you all in Dayton.

Comments:  I just received my dues notification and noticed a request for a donation to the "Memorial Fund and Endowment Fund."

A little bit of history that I have not seen in any of the History at Tan Son Nhut concerns, "WDMET."

"WDMET" stands for "Wounds Data Munitians Effectiveness Team."

This small unit made up of Medical Doctor's and medical personal for a classified mission between May 1967 to June of 1969.

A lot of this information since, has been declassified, is on the Internet.  Although the task was not very un-pleasant and gruesome.  It was one of the most important studies ever done during a war time event.  The team compiled meaningful information on battle field casualties, pertaining to 8,000 cases and over 2,500 autopies.

In this unique mission we provide invaluable information and development of equipment and procedures.

These would included surgical emergency Room and wound treatment procedures, development of new helmets, the Kevlar chest protectors (vests).  The development of brain injuries treatment for these type traumas.

These records are used today by medical schools all over the United States for studies on battle field injuries and traumas.

We were located in a corner of the largest mortuary in Vietnam, located on Tan Son Nhut.  They did not house us at the air base but in Saigon because of its classified mission.

It is part of Tan Son Nhut History and also one of the only missions to ever to be undertaken in a battlefield enviroment>  Done to help improve the survival rate of our soldiers.

If I could be of any help, let me know.

Sincerely,

Raynold Gauvin

I am trying to locate Jim Wade, who is a member of the Tan Son Nhut Association and served in Saigon before coming to Pleiku where I was from 1965 -  1966.

He has posted pictures on this site but there was no email address.  I would greatly appreciate it if someone could give him my email or send his to me.  I was in the 15th. Aerial Port Squadron and was a "Box Humper" along with him.  We also were in Dakto together during "Operation Hawthorne," in support of the 101st Air Borne Division.

Thank you,

Wayne Lewis

*********************************************************************************************************

Remembering Roger Benton

At his 93rd birthday celebration at the Monticello Hotel, retired Air Force Colonel Roger G. Benton recalled that, on March 16, 1941, he and a couple of other Cowlitz County boys were treated to an appreciation breakfast by some "civic-minded ladies."

"Being apprehensive of the unknown ahead, our breakfast was less than gleeful," he wrote.  "Our moods were somber and discussions centered on our life pursuits after our military commitment was completed.  After breakfast and farewells, we were transported to Ft. Lewis and inducted into the Army that afternoon."

Between 1948 - 1949, he logged 179 trips flying a two-engine C-47 and a four-engine C-54 during the Berlin Airlift.  In Vietnam, Benton was awarded the Bronze star after serving as Chief Security Police and Squadron Commander at Tan Son Nhut Air Base.

"I entered the service reluctantly," Uncle Roger wrote in his memoirs. "It interrupted dreams I had.  After Pearl Harbor, however, I recognized the need for a strong military to preserve our cherished way of life.  I helped fulfill that need serving my country - proudly."

I'm proud of all my uncle has accomplished.  As an American, I'm also proud of the many men and women and their families who sacrifice their own dreams, their own time and too often their lives for us.

Comments:  I have a Form 77a, dated Aug 24, 1968 - March 24, 1969.

It is a "Letter of Commendation", from the 377th Goup Commander, at Tan Son Nhut Air Base.

Can anyone that also received the commendation letter contact me at the above email.

The letter states:  821st Fire Team Leader, A-7.

How would someone obtain a duplicate copy of that commendation letter and I believe, maybe there was a certificate for training course at Schofield Barracks.

I believe i was there in May of 1968.

Is it possible to get information of all deployments and bases that I was sent to from 1968 to 1969.

I also went back in 1970 and left Vietnam in December 1970.

I don't remember what month I left or what unit.

Is it possible to get roster of the unit or units and flights that i was in.

I have sent many emails and received no responses.

Thank you,

Robert Durham

"I represent a Vietnam War Veteran who served in Thailand during the Vietnam War; he was an air control specialist in the Air Force coordinating, among other things, bombing runs into Vietnam.  Though most of his service was in Thailand and Okinawa during the Vietnam War, he spent a short period of time in-country in Vietnam during the Vietnam War while flying on "Temporary Duty" from Thailand to Okinawa.

While in Vietnam, he was exposed to Agent Orange, and as result has been diagnosed with some severe (and fatal) health conditions.  He has applied to the VA for benefits, who has denied his claim on the sole grounds that he can't prove he was in Vietnam when he said he was.  We have been able to prove each and every piece of my client's story except the piece that puts him on the ground in Vietnam.  The VA has told us that if we can prove that my client put his boots on the ground in Vietnam at the time that he claims he did, even for just a few moments, they will concede exposure to Agent Orange and Agent Orange's causation of his medical conditions.  If we are successful, my client will receive medical care and other financial and non-financial benefits from the government, and his survivors will receive some help and benefits after he passes away.

My client distinctly remembers flying to/from Thailand to Okinawa in 1965 -  1966 on a Military Airlift Command (MAC) contract flight operated by Continental Airlines, with specific recollection of stay-overs and deboarding in Saigon, Vietnam, while en route.  What we have learned is that nearly all MAC flights from Thailand-Okinawa during the Vietnam War went through Saigon exactly as my client says, and deboarded all passengers to refuel, exactly as my client says.  We have collected statements (from pilots, archivists, airline historians, flight attendants, etc.) corroborating this point from every MAC contractor in that era except the one that my client flew on - Continental.  For some reason, I have had no luck trying to find anyone familiar with Continental's contract operations during the Vietnam War.  Without a statement related to Continental's MAC flights, the VA will continue to deny my client the benefits he needs.

Here's where you all come in - on a total shot in the dark.

Do any of you have any ideas of folks at Continental (historian, archivist, pilot, etc) that might be able to corroborate our theory (that all MAC flights from Thailand to Okinawa from 1965 - 1966 passed through Saigon)?  Or, an even longer shot, do you all know anyone who might have been a Continental - MAC pilot in the 1965 - 1969 timeframe?"

My goal is to share photos and memories of our friends to provide comfort and to provide positive memories.  It's important for people to have something besides a name on the wall to remember the fallen.

I asked myself:  "What would I want shared with my friends and family to leave them with positive memories."

Oh ... I have fond memories of Tan Son Nhut.  I used to fly down from Cu Chi to pick up liquor for our EM club.  I salute the Air Force personnel who provided some of the best chow at the best "Mess Hall" in the world.

Don't forget, the Army had a heliport inside the TSN perimeter called "Hotel-3".

I will be happy to share information on Cu Chi or Phu Bai for the above times.,

Comments:  This is the anniversary of American Independence.  We are celebrating for the 235th time and it is all thanks to you, TSNA Brothers and Sisters, that it is at all possible.

Each generation bears the call of love and duty and steps up to wear the uniform of America's best.  Our men and women walk in harm's way to ensure that their Beloved America continues to be free and to live in joy and peace.

You have bought and paid for those freedoms.  Many have paid the ultimate price.

All gave some and some gave all.

Thanks, Brothers and Sisters, for your service to out country and to the TSNA.   Enjoy our July 4, 2011.

You have already paid for it.

Salute,

Janice Jones

Comments:  I am seeking information or help in any way.  In advance, "Thank you for your time."

My name is Gary Totten, I was sent TDY to Tan Son Nhut from Tachikawa AB Japan in June of 1966.  I was a mechanic in the Air Force.  I have been trying to find something to prove that I was there.  My DD214's show a Vietnam Service Medal Award but the VA does not think that was enough, they want proof.

I have no orders stating that I was TDY.  I am sending for my Leave and Earnings Statements, it should show hazard duty pay.

I am hoping that will be enough.

I was there from June 1966 to the begining of October 1966, in Vehicle Maintenance.

Your help in finding anyone from that time frame would be fantastic.

Sincerly,

Gary W. Totten

My electric shop was located next to the mortuary and each day as I passed it on my way to work, I saw over 100 metal caskets and at the end of the week they were replaced by 100 more.  This took place the whole year I was stationed at Tan Son Nhut.  General Momyer was MACV Commander.

I would very much like to get in touch with members of 377th Electric shop but have no Idea how to accomplish this.

Comments:  My name is Stephen Langone my fathers name was Greg Langone he served in Det 1, 460th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Tan Son Nhut, in Vietnam, from about Dec 1968 to Dec 1969.  He has since passed away in June 2009.  We were separated by divorce and I only found him recently and was able to meet him before he passed.  He was also able to see his two grandchildren for the first time.   Our time togeather was very short but of very good quality.

The reason I am witting you is that I have been trying to find out more information about his time in Vietnam.  I myself am retired Navy, spent a lot of time in the Persian gulf running down Iraqi gun boats, anti- pirate operations off the coast of Somalia and some time in Kosovo.  So his service means a lot to me.

I was wondering if by any chance you might have known him or run across him or know someone who knew him at Tan Son Nhut.  I have a few pictures of him in Vietnam.  One in particular shows him in front of a C-123 with the name "White Whale" on it.  Researching that pic I found out some names:  SSgt Gene Reily, Major Wadley, Amn Higden and Sgt Roy.

Also he posted on the web site (www.vietvet.org) here looking for people whom he served with.  I have tracked down a few names that he might have known him, they seem to be nicknames they are:  Tex, Foot, Hackett, Smitty, Jungle George, Pappy Pitts, Ski, Shaw, Reily (whom I think is SSgt Gene Reily), and Welch.

Do you know any of these people by chance.  Any information that you can help with would be greatly appreciated.  I am also sending a copy of this email to Greg's brother Danny (my Uncle) he too like to be informed of the things his brother did.  Greg and him were very close and I know that these things mean a lot to him as well as me.

All Respect,

Stephen Langone

A Proclamation for All Veterans and their Loved Ones - Past, Present and Future

As May 21, 2011 is Armed Forces Day and May 30, 2011 is Memorial Day, let a proclamation go out to each and every Veteran from World War II to May 30, 2011 and it shall read, "Thanksgiving is a day when we pause to give thanks for the things and freedoms we have.  Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day are the days when we pause to give thanks to the Men and Women who have fought and are still today fighting for the things and freedoms that we still have."

We will always remember.
We will always be proud.
We will always be prepared, so that we may always be free.
We will never forget.
Remember U.S.A.!!!

We can never say "Thank You" enough!  Honors and appreciations to each and every one of you!

Thanks to Larry Fry for his input in this writing.  Thanks to Charles Penley for getting it out there.  Salute to all my Nam Vet Brothers and Sisters and all of our Brothers and Sisters who are still going out every day into harm's way.

GALLANTRY CROSS (FOREIGN DECORATION)
Country: Republic of Vietnam
Instituted:  1950

Criteria:  Deeds of valor and acts of courage/heroism while fighting the enemy.  Devices:  Bronze palm similar to (36), bronze, silver, gold stars similar to (73) through (75) denote level of award and additional awards.

Reflecting her French Colonial heritage, Vietnam's Gallantry Cross was the direct equivalent of the French Croix de Guerre and rewarded acts of valor or heroic conduct during a conflict with an armed enemy.  Although awarded sparingly during the early years of the Vietnam War, the Gallantry Cross was widely beset upon RVN troops as the conflict wore on.  As a result, some infantrymen were required to wear, longer-than-usual suspension ribbon on the Gallantry Cross to accommodate the huge number of devices.  However, awards to American troops, while quite liberal, never approached the staggering numbers awarded to indigenous personnel.  As with the French Croix de Guerre, the emblems worn on the ribbon denoted the level at which the medal was achieved.  For an Army or Armed Forces Despatch:  a bronze palm; for an Army Corps Despatch:  a gilt star; for a Divisional Despatch:  a silver star; for a Brigade, Regimental or Unit Despatch:  a bronze star.  There were no restrictions on the number of devices which could be worn on the ribbon.  The medal is a bronze, cross patte with the four arms interconnected by engravings representing two dragons with two crossed sabres between the arms, handles down.  In the center is a disk showing the map of Vietnam with a laurel branch on either side and the ribbon across the map inscribed:  REWARD OF THE STATE (in Vietnamese characters).  The reverse contains the same design except the disk in the center is plain.  The suspension is rectangular in shape and depicts two stylized dragons facing one other.

The Gallantry Cross also appeared in a second configuration, that of a unit citation.  In this format, the ribbon was worn encased in a typical U.S. gold unit award frame.  When conferred upon a unit, no medal was awarded but personnel of the U.S. Air Force and Naval Services wore a bronze palm on the unit award ribbon.  Army recipients were also awarded the unit citation but all four devices described above were utilized to indicate the size of the cited unit.  For more detailed information on Republic of Vietnam awards refer to the book. "The Decorations and Medals of the Republic of Vietnam and Her Allies," 1950-1975 by Foster/ Sylvester.

Comments:  Hello Tan Son Nhut Association, I was at Tan Son Nhut Air Base between January 1969 and August 1970.

Since we were in the 7th Air Force, we were under/command of MACV along with the US Army and 111 Marines.

I remember a lot of Air Force personnel wearing the MACV patches on their fatigues/BDUs back then.  I am making a shadow box with memento's with my ribbons, chevrons, patches and was wondering if I could put the subdued or bright red and yellow patch in my shadow box?  Not sure if I should.

One more question:  The Vietnam Gallantry Cross has 3 designations (gold star, bronze star and Palm).

I was just on a veteran's website that explained that the (Unit) Vietnam Gallantry Cross "Medal" with Palm.  It indicates that you can wear the medal along with the ribbon as long as it has the "Palm" and not the "Gold or Bronze Star" on the Medal.  Others claim that we can't wear the medal at all.  Can anyone let me know?

Thanks for any information,

Larry Parks
USAF 1967 - 1971

FROM THE WEB MASTER:

1.  I can not answer the first question.

2.  Prior to the end of the Vietnam War, you could only wear the Vietnam Gallantry Cross only if you were awarded it individually.  At the very end of the Vietnam War, it was awarded to everyone who had served in Vietnam.

One Bronze Star on that ribbon, indicates that it was your second award.

The Silver Star on that ribbon, idicates that it was your fifth award.

Memorial for:  Maj. Gen. Homer Smith, Jr.
Born in Breckenridge, Texas on Feb. 16, 1922
Died Mar. 6, 2011 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Visitation:  Wednesday, Mar. 16, 2011
Service:  Thursday, Mar. 17, 2011
Funeral Home:  Porter Loring Mortuary North
Cemetery:  Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery

Photo taken of Major General Homer D. Smith aboard the helicopter that transported him from the U.S. Embassy in Saigon to USS Midway.

The General responsible for planning and executing "Operation Frequent Wind and Operation Baby-Lift" during the fall of Saigon passed away in San Antonio on March 6, 2011.  Major General Homer D. Smith served in the United States Army for thirty-six years and was 89 at the time of his death.  Besides Vietnam he also participated in Word War II and Korea but he is most known for his second tour in Vietnam where he was in charge of planning and executing operation “Frequent Wind” and helping several thousand South Vietnamese flee before the North Vietnamese entered Saigon.  Operation “Frequent Wind” was responsible for the evacuation of the U.S. Embassy personnel and the remaining military contingent by air and later by helicopters from the Embassy roof.  He recounted the days leading to the fall of Saigon and the evacuation of orphan’s in the Discovery Channel productions, the “Fall of Saigon” and “Operation Baby-Lift.”  General Smith respected and appreciated the Vietnamese people and when he spoke about his role in the evacuation from Saigon he often said, “It was the saddest day of my life.”

General Smith was a bona fide member of America’s “greatest generation.”  A native of Breckenridge, Texas, he was the son of Homer D. Smith, Sr., and Sara Elsie Snodgrass.  At the height of World War II, General Smith graduated from the Texas A&M class of 1943.  Almost immediately upon his graduation, he was sent to England to help plan the logistics for D-Day.  After D-Day he continued to serve in the European Theater until 1946 when he returned to civilian life for a few years before re-entering the Army once more.  General Smith became a career logistician and during his first tour in Vietnam he served in various senior logistical assignments from 1968 to 1970.  While he was in charge of mortuary affairs he would visit the morgue every day for “someone should be there to send the soldiers off.”  To him, the morgue also served as a daily reminder of the seriousness of war and therein especially the ultimate sacrifice endured by military members and their families.

When General Smith returned to Vietnam in September 1974, major U.S. combat operations had ceased and our assistance to the South Vietnamese was driven by the 1973 Paris Agreements.  As the Defense Attaché he was the senior military officer in the country.  Major hostilities between the warring Vietnamese parties were supposed to have stopped as they sought national reconciliation, but they continued their military operations against each other.

Saddled with the task of “shutting out the lights” on our South Vietnamese ally General Smith tried to save as many lives as possible in the process and through his efforts, 7500 South Vietnamese were evacuated from Saigon.   To some it might have seemed like an insurmountable task but General Smith tackled the highly charged political challenge and defeated obstacles that developed during the course of the evacuation.  When the South Vietnamese government refused to let members of their military leave, General Smith through the embassy staff, issued them American passports.  As much as he tried to help them, he once said; “it was not easy to convince them to leave since not only did they have to take their immediate family with them but also their extended and many of them decided to stay because of it.”

General Smith wanted to proceed with the evacuation earlier but U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin stubbornly refused, fearing it could trigger panic among the South Vietnamese.  As the North Vietnamese got closer to Saigon, General Smith knew he had to act.  Going against the wishes of Ambassador Martin, he called then Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and got permission to implement operation “Frequent Wind.”   He later said about Ambassador Martin, “he didn’t want to leave.  Martin was in denial and did not think Saigon would fall to the North Vietnamese.  In the end we almost had to forcibly remove the Ambassador to get him onboard the helicopter.”

During 29 - 30 April 1975, "Operation Frequent Wind,” saved 7000 people before the remaining American military personnel and General Smith left Saigon.  In reference to the evacuation, Colonel Herrington said; “As one of General Smith’s officers, I marveled at how he kept his cool, his display of determination and courage while also setting an example for the staff by his methodical approach to problems that developed during the course of the evacuation.  He was not the type to fall victim to histrionics, posturing, or other conduct that would have been the undoing of some officers faced with such life-and-death decisions.  Only once, and he can be excused for this, did his temper ever flare, when ever-so-carefully he directed the entire DAO (Defense Attaché Office) compound, also known as “Pentagon East,” be wired with explosives for as General Smith stated ‘I’ll be dammed if I’m going to leave anything for those b-------.”

Before operation “Frequent Wind” was implemented, General Smith planned and executed operation “Baby-Lift.”  During the course of the American presence in Vietnam, several children were born to Vietnamese mothers and American fathers.  Due to the stigma attached to ethnically mixed children and the inability of their mothers to care for them, many ended up in orphanages.  On 4 April 1975, the initial flight transporting 328 orphans and accompanying adults left Tan-San- Nhut airfield in Saigon.  Within minutes after take-off the locks on the rear loading ramp released causing it to open.  Rapid decompression occurred, and the plane started to destabilize and fail.  The crew managed to turn the airplane around but due to equipment failure they missed the landing strip and ended up crashing in a rice paddy close to the airport.   The airplane broke into four parts during the crash and only 175 orphans and adults survived.  The tragedy of this flight was especially emotional for General Smith as many of the accompanying adults were women who worked for him, and most of them died in the crash.

After General Smith returned from Vietnam he reported to Fort Monroe, VA to become Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.  In June of 1977, he took command of the U.S. Army Logistics Center at Fort Lee, VA.  After he retired July 1979, General Smith moved to Brussels Belgium, to head the newly established Logistics Directorate at the Headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).  During his tenure at NATO he was also one of four NATO employees who would serve as Secretary General during his absences.  Prior to his first tour of duty in Vietnam, General Smith was the Commander, Camp Darby in Italy.  General Smith received many awards and medals throughout his military career to include the Distinguished Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Legion of Merit and the Air Medal.

General Smith leaves behind his Danish born and loving wife Jette; son Clay of Bend, Oregon; daughters and sons-in-law; Amanda Smith (Brian Mclaughlin) of San Francisco, California; Sophia O’Hara (Jack O’Hara) of San Antonio, Texas; Karen Smith of Dallas, Texas; and CPT Frederikke “Ricca” Buhl-Cook, USAR (CW4 Lore D. Cook, USA) of Tampa, Florida.  Left behind are also his lovely grandchildren:  Dameon, Michaela, Bridgit, Rory, Jessica and Dylan.  His daughter Lou-Ann Smith preceded him in death.

To everyone in his family and those who got to know him over the years, he was a wonderful and caring husband, father and friend.  In the words of his daughter Ricca; “he was not just a father, he was a friend.   He was not just a rock, he was Mount Everest.”  For all the people who knew him “he was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again.”  (Shakespeare)

The funeral will be held on Thursday, the 17th of March at the Dodd Field Chapel, located at the Fort Sam National Cemetery.  The service is at 0900 hours, followed by the grave-side service at 1030 hours.   After the grave-side service there will be a reception/receiving line at the old Fort Sam Houston Officers Club (now known as the Lincoln Housing Community Center).

The Smith family would like to thank COL Stuart Herrington, USA (Ret) for his support and contribution to his obituary.

Comments:  I landed as passenger on an airliner at Tan San Nhut Air Base, in the summer of 1965.  I thought the pilot seemed to bring the plane in very steep, which I took to be a safety precaution against enemy fire from the jungle below.  It was hot as I recall.  After a week or so at Saigon, a C-47 carried me on a mail run to various bases, on my way to II Corps Headquarters at Pleiku where I was to run the post office there.  A load of Vietnamese soldiers were dropped off at one small airstrip.  A guy told me VC were sometimes transported on these milk runs.  I hoped he was joking.   At one stop I overheard the pilot call down to someone about the Officer’s Club being open.  I figured he was thirsty.

Once I returned to Saigon on a C-130 to receive an award earned back in the USA.   After circling in a long line of planes waiting to land our plane started down behind the plane landing ahead of us.  Then the lead plane – a C-47 I think – blew a tire.  Our pilot went to full throttle and soared up and over the plane that was blocking the runway.

On the last occasion I came in flat on my back on a C-130, bound for the hospital.  After getting some repair in Japan I returned to Saigon and remained there waiting orders for home.  On the day before my flight home, I reported to the staff sergeant at the airport and showed him my orders.  He said, “I don’t have you on the manifest.”   I replied, “You won’t believe this, but when I reported to Travis AFB to come over here they had no record of me.  I came over here on “space available.”  He said, “That is how you will go back.  Be here by 8 o’clock in the morning and I’ll try to put you in a vacant seat.”

That evening a certain Air Force enlisted man I came over with who ran a bar and restaurant on the side started in his black English import antique car to carry me to the airport.  I did not mean to be left behind.  It was pouring down rain.  On the road out we were stopped at a guard shack and checkpoint.   The Vietnamese officer told me that no one was permitted through as some sort of VC activity was reported.  He did say an Australian convoy was due to pass through shortly.  I got out with my baggage, told my friend goodbye, and stood under the shelter with the officer until a four or five vehicle convoy came along.  The Australian officer in a staff car told me to get in the back seat with my luggage, and we chatted until he let me off at the airport.

I sat there the rest of the night, listening to the rain and watching wharf rats scurry across the floor of the waiting room.  In the morning passengers started coming in.  The staff sergeant with his manifest came out to stand by the door and began to call off names.  I believe over 100 names were called.  I was on pins and needles!  After a short pause –  no doubt on purpose – the sergeant called out my name!  I grabbed my luggage and as I went by him, I said “I could hug you!”  He grinned and said, “You better not!  Good luck!”

Thus I left Tan San Nhut for the last time.

Senate Declares March 30th as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day”
Resolution Introduced by Senator Richard Burr

Washington D.C – The U.S. Senate yesterday declared March 30th as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day,” agreeing unanimously to a resolution introduced by Senator Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

On March 30, 1973, all U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam under the terms of the Treaty of Paris.  This March 30th, the Senate has encouraged Americans across the country to recognize Vietnam veterans for their sacrifice and demonstrate a warm welcome to these soldiers who returned from war to a politically divided country.

“I’m pleased that the Senate has agreed to set aside a day to give our Vietnam veterans a warm, long-overdue welcome home.  I strongly encourage communities throughout North Carolina and across the country to observe this day with activities and events that honor these veterans for their service.  It’s time they receive the recognition they have earned and deserve.  This day also provides our nation with an important teaching moment.  Never again should our men and women serving in the armed forces receive the same treatment as those returning from Vietnam,” said Senator Richard Burr.

Senator Burr introduced the resolution for the second consecutive year on February 16, 2011.

The United States became involved in Vietnam because policy-makers believed that if South Vietnam fell to a communist government, communism would spread throughout the rest of Southeast Asia.  The US Armed Forces began serving in an advisory role to the South Vietnamese in 1961, and in 1965, ground combat troops were sent into Vietnam.  On March 30, 1973, after many years of combat, all US troops withdrew.   More than 58,000 members of the United States Armed Forces lost their lives and more than 300,000 were wounded in Vietnam.

Senators John Boozman (R-AR), Thad Cochran (R-MS), James Inhofe (R-OK), and Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Mike Johanns (R-NE) co-sponsored the legislation.  The resolution now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Comments:  Hello, I was at Tan Son Nhut from June of 1967 to June of 1968, in the Air Force.  I’ve got two questions.  I’ve been looking for an aerial photo or good drawing of the base for some time.  I have pieces of the base in my mind but can’t put all of those pieces together.  Can you suggest where to look?

During TET 1968, we were stuck in our hangar, directly across from the terminal with one hangar between us and the flight line, for a few days and then were able to travel around the base.  We were not part of the defense of the base, very smart move on your part, so I never really knew much about it other than we were safe.  Is there a history of the TET offensive at Tan Son Nhut?

Finally, for 4 years my exposure to Air Police was to stay away from them, not wanting to get on the wrong side of them.  You guys had much tougher duty than I did as a jet engine mechanic, even in the states.  I see parts of what the Security Police did to defend the base but haven’t seen a complete story.   I need to thank you guys for saving our lives who knows how many times.

Thank you,

Comments:  The Tan Son Nhut Association, web page must undergo a maintenance processes on Tuesday night, Feb 22, 2011.

What is happening is that our current web page is hosted by chartertn.net.   They have informed me that they will no longer be using the hardware and software to keep supporting a "FREE" .org web pages.  That they were going to close it down on Feb 28, 2011 at midnight.

I have secured a new internet provider.  They are selling to us 100,000 Mega Byte Disk Space.  I did not make a typo on these numbers.  We currently are restricted to 20 Megabytes.

What that means is that on Tuesday, it is going to switch from chartertn.net.  You should not even see any type of interference on your end.  However, if you do not see the TSNA web pages on that night, please give it approximately 4-6 hours to make the switch.

General Vang Pao's Promotion to a 4-Star General
Post on:  February 12, 2011

On February 4, 2011, the Royal Lao Family, represented by the Regent, His Royal Highness Tiao Sauryavong Savang, gave General Vang Pao the great honor of being promoted posthumously to a 4-Star General.  His Royal Highness stated that General Vang Pao would have been granted that honor many years earlier, however, the country fell before that ceremony could take place.   His Royal Highness solemnly placed the fourth star on a pillow by General Vang Pao's casket, before advancing to pay his last respects to one of the Royal Lao Family's most loyal soldiers and legendary warriors.   His Royal Highness movingly brushed feather light hands over the head of the casket, in a last goodbye.

Most of my tour, I manned three towers, "Tango-1", "Tango-Alfa" and "Tango-10".  Our job was to watch for incoming rockets or rocket flashes in the horizon.  When we saw a flash we communicated with Joint Defense Operations Center (JDOC.)

All three towers at best would get a fix on target and send the information to (JDOC.)

I think of those days even today.

Comments:  Nick - Thanks for asking about your uncle's Vietnam service.  I have forwarded your email to some of our other TSNA members who may know more than I do about the SEA NOTAM Center.

NOTAM stands for Notice to Airmen.  This generally is a special announcement about information pilots need to know but which is generated too late to be included in regular mass printed documents.  A good Vietnam example of a NOTAM would be a notice that there's a bomb crater in the middle of the runway at such-and-such air field!!  We cannot print it because the mortar round just hit this morning ... but it's something that pilots NEED to know!!!

So the SEA NOTAM Center would be that office in Southeast Asia (SEA) which generated those special notices to airmen in Vietnam and the Southeast Asian area.

I personally do not know where it was ... probably at Tan Son Nhut Air Base near Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) ... but one of my TSNA brothers may know where it was.  You will hear from one or more of them!!

By the way -- Great pictures!  I'd like your permission to use them in our monthly newsletter and possibly on line in our Photo of the Month site.  Will you give me your Uncle's name so we can identify him in our possible non-commercial use of the pictures?

Here is a shot in the dark but I found your website online for the Tan Son Nhut Association.

I have had this mug of my uncle's for many years and wondered if you could tell me more about what the "Sea Notam Center" was.

I don’t know much about him as he sadly passed away a year before I was born in 1976.

His name was Bob Kynyk, and I believe he was in Vietnam for 2 years (or more?).

I've attached a picture of the mug and of my uncle (red hair on the far left).

Any info you may have is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Comments:  I'm looking for some help of a technical nature and don't know who to direct my question to.  I would like to know how the water on the base was treated, specifically the chemicals used to treat that water.  I'm not sure just which AFSC or MOS this would fall under or even if it was done by which branch of the service at Tan Son Nhut.  I am hoping that someone will know and put me in touch with the right person so I can find out what I'm looking for with my inquiry.

I was stationed at Tan Son Nhut from April 1967 thru November 1968 and have a theory that I need to work on but need some help with the water portion.  I do remember that when I first arrived, the water was a kind of light brown color and had an odor to it. A few weeks or maybe a couple of months later, it became more clear and most of the odor was gone.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it very much.  This is very important to my project and theory so any help is needed.  You can reach me at the above listed email address.

I don't recall a hearing test during my clearing at the Infirmary.

Only questions, but no formal hearing test.  I could be wrong, but won't know until I can access the records.

Just curious if anyone else filed a similar claim.  Another claim was denied as well, and that was from a knee injury during the February 18th rocket attack (1968).

Comments:  43 years is not enough time to blur the memory of the uncertainty of the events of January 31, 1968.  While many details may be lost by now, that sense of the ground war coming on base was installed permanently into my memory.  The Security Police who kept the rest of us — nearly all of whom were unarmed — from facing direct enemy contact are deserving of accolades every time this event is remembered.

Somewhere I have a photo of myself wearing a steel pot (which we never wore) and sitting in the back of a ¾ ton on the flight line just in front of the 16th Tac Recon PPIF trailers just after sunup on January 31st — we’d been up all night, wondering what would occur next, knowing that we couldn’t defend ourselves or the compound without arms.  In those days, there was little information available for those without the need to know.

Thank you to all who kept us alive regardless of the cost to themselves, and a salute to all who share the personal memory of this morning.  And at this stage of my life, though some here may disagree with me, I offer my late respect to the enemy troops who fought and died there, seeking to terminate the occupation of their homeland by a foreign country.

I am a 1968 TET Survivor thanks to the Security Police, the augmentees, and the Army troops that they gathered together to prevent Tan Son Nhut from being overran 43 years ago tonight (31 Jan. 1968).

I was asleep in the 1200 area when all heck broke loose that night.  We were unarmed, untrained, and afraid.  We were A/C fixers, not war fighters.   I have a very strong feeling that if it hadn’t been for the Security Police and what they did that night that I and many of my friends and co-workers would be dead.

So a "BIG THANKS" to all that saved my butt that night and my whole tour at TSN Vietnam.

Comments:   The following is an excerpt from, "The Damned Shall Have A Final Amen," a novel written by Robert Stanley Need.

Bob Need was Tan Son Nhut Association Vice President and Editor of Revetments for many years, until his death, July 2004.

Bob’s novel was never published.  He was in the midst of the final edit a few days before his death.

The excerpt is from the book regarding the beginning of TET 1968.  The base was on red alert.

Captain Donnezetti and Sergeant Wilson pull up in front of the formation.  We haven’t seen Colonel Seviers or Major Brace yet.  Wilson goes in front of the formation.  "B Flight, attention!”

"Attention to orders!”  Commands the captain.

“Sectors report!”  Orders the sergeant.

“B Flight, at ease!”  Commands Captain Donnezetti starting slowly down the line of the five sectors.  “Tonight, I’ll be brief”, he says in a firm voice.  “Tan Son Nhut Air Base is presently under Red Alert, meaning the high probability of immediate attack.

“Tonight, men, it’s all up to us.  You’ve got ten thousand people on this base who are looking to you for protection.”  As he talks he frequently pauses and looks directly into the face of the nearest guard.   “Because of your character, your brawn, your brains and your training, you are the guys who are going to do the job.  All you have to remember tonight are three words.”

“The first is teamwork.  You’re going to find tonight that the word is not the silly cliché or empty label some people like to think it is.  The word is going to be a fact.  If an attack should be launched against this base you will have light from above from the Spookies, the enemy will be harassed by their mini-guns, Army gunships will cover your positions on the ground, and if necessary, elements of the United States Army will be here fighting along side you.  Medical personnel, ammunition supply people, firefighters and food service handlers are all standing by in total readiness to respond to any situation.  You are not alone.   And you are a vital part of this interlocking and interdependent network.”

“The second word command.  Battle command is the exercise of the commander coordinating all factors of defense to achieve the security of this base.  I think everybody here knows and respects Colonel Seviers.  We all have had many occasions to watch him demonstrate his loyalty, concern, and I will add proudly, his affection for you.  His orders tonight will be issued in full knowledge of the situation and what is required.  If a position is ordered to be held it is because it is vital to the whole situation, and if you are asked to withdraw it is for the same reason.  You will not be ordered to perform any suicidal move or asked to do the dangerously impossible task of holding positions that are untenable.”

“And, the last word is … fear.  If, and when an attack begins … we will all be afraid.  But, men, fear is a awesome power.  The human animal is no different that all other creatures, and fear can be our most powerful weapon.  Look at the sentry dogs.  They have no knowledge of politics, the morality of war, strategies, or tactics.  But faced with attack they respond triggered by the common fear known to all creatures, including us.”

“And here’s where the mind takes over.”

He has paused before a very young airman.  His sharp gaze is concentrated on the young man’s eyes.  The guard has not flinched a second and returns the officer’s gaze steadily.

“Weak minds turn fear into cowardice, stifle our breathing, turn our legs into jelly, our hands into quivering useless tools and our reasoning into hysteria.  But the dogs have been trained and you have been trained.   The strong, well-trained mind takes the lightning bolt of fear and lets it forge the backbone into a rod of iron, lets it race adrenalin through the body alerting all the senses and sinews to preparedness.”

Captain Donnezetti moves on to another.  “The energy of fear sharpens the hearing, returns to us the unused command of smell, gives heroic strength to our muscles and turns our eyes into deadly telescopes that can sight down the muzzle of our weapons and pierce the darkest night or heaviest fog.”

“Fear is the flag that rises and proclaims our self-preservation and the preservation of those we hold dear.  Fear is the fiery forge in which the iron chain of Tan Son Nhut’s safety is wrought.”

“We will hold the line tonight, and for as long as it takes, and will walk away from this field erect and proud for the rest of the days of our lives.”

He returns to the center of the street before the formation.  He looks across all the men for a long moment.  “I will be with you tonight, men. and I will be armed with my prayers for all of you.”  A moment later he stiffens, and commands, “Attention!  Sector Chiefs, brief and post the guard!”

“Yes, sir!”  Five strong voices hurl back!

Here in Baltimore, the only battle I'm getting ready to do battle with is mother nature, getting ready for another snow storm that there calling for 10 to 20 inches of snow.  And to be honest, I'm too old now to do battle with the snow and mother nature.

Comments:  My name is David Stubbe.  I was stationed and worked at the Tan Son Nhut Airbase from 3 March 1965 to March 1966.  At that time it was USASCV.  I was with the 164th Transportation Detachment.  Our parent unit was the 507th Transportation Company from Ft Eustis, Va.

We were responsible form receiving, shipping and warehousing of everything that came through Tan Son Nhut.

I remember a sign there that said, " Everyday is Monday."  They weren't kidding.

Sincerely

David Stubbe

Comments:   Dear Veteran, I am trying research my father's Air Force service and wonder if you can help or point me the right way, as I have hit a wall.

My father was stationed at Tan Son Nhut some time between 1964 - 1966 (?) with TAC.

I have no real information on him, other than things he suggested and photo's he had.

I believe he may have been with an Air Commando Wing or Photo Reconnaissance Wing.  However, I have little to support that thought.

What I do know is, he had a "Aussie/Boonie" style hat with a red patch, “TAN SON NHUT - VIETNAM”, which I think was common among "Air commando's"?

He had some tools used for photo analysis.

He had the Air Crew Badge and Marksman badge for pistol and M-16.

He had photo's taken at TSN, including some of RF-4C's, (460th TRW?)

He spoke of AC-47's, L-19's and Skyraider's.

He knew a lot about Long Rang Reconnaissance Patrol's (LRRP), FAC's, ground and air navigation.

He may have also been TDY at Cam Ranh, Phan Rang and Pleiku Air Base's.

He told me that when he first got to Vietnam; "We were not to wear any patch's except rank and name."  Why?

When he came back to the states, he was stationed at Mountain Home AFB, which hosted RF-4C Phantom’s.

I believe he may have been based in Turkey at some point as well.  The only aircraft I can find to have been based there are RF-104’s and U-2’s.  A pattern?

He told me he was a Crew Chief on F-4's.  That's all he ever told me.  I am pretty sure I don't know his whole story and would like too.

I don’t know if he couldn’t talk about it, or if he didn’t want to talk about it.

I don't know if I can obtain his DD-214 but even if I could, what will that tell me?

I would be grateful for any help.

His name is Paul A. Maxwell. (A2C?) Thank you so much for all your military service!

Comments:  The 43rd anniversary of the Tet Offensive of Jan. 31, 1968 is approaching us.  It was and still is a most important date for the Tan Son Nhut Association.  The Viet Cong laid it all out in an effort to destroy us and to finally get rid of us.

Thanks to each and every military Brother and Sister on the ground and in the air and water, we survived and we endured.  The Viet Cong were stopped and repelled and we had the Victory.

Bravo to our TSNA Brothers and Sisters!

Salute,

TSNA Sister - Janice Jones

Comments:  Hi, my name is John Sacchetti.  I was a C-133A loadmaster in the USAF 1962 - 1966.

During the years 1964 - 1966 I flew many times into Saigon.   Images of the commercial airport are most vivid in my, albeit failing, memory.  I have enjoyed researching numerous images of the airport and airbase but have yet to come across any pictures of C-133's (not C-130's) at either facility.  If you should have some in your archives / or can point me to a website, I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance - you have a great website.

Did the 460th Wing or 460th get awards or any decorations, for the years 1967 and 1968.

Thanks for any info you might have.

Comments:  The Tan Son Nhut Association, received a request from Robert Dilworth, in September 2008.  He was telling us about the two radar domes located on Tan Son Nhut Airbase.

It is the Christmas season and the base commander had a neon, "Christmas Tree and a Star of David," placed on the two radar domes.  Robert was wanting to know if anyone had a photograph of it.

After many searches over the past twenty eight months, Charles Penley, has finally found a photograph of one radar dome with the "Star of David," neon sign on it.

It was located at URL:    http://ww2.stripes.com/photoday/index.php?photo=122406photoday.html

Hope that you enjoy it.

It is a good time to either start something new or finish an old thing. I'm finishing year 34 and starting year 35 in years of marriage. It seems just like yesterday. Brothers and Sisters - start thinking about and planning for our next TSNA family reunion. Y'all take care and we will have another great get together. May the New Year treat you better. Be good and be good to each other. You are much too important to us, so, keep in touch with us. We can all begin again. My New Year's resolution is to be the best me that I can possibly be and to treat others the best that I can. That goes for all my "other brothers" and sisters.

Happy New Year!!!

Love,

Janice Jones
